BROKENNESS

BROKENNESS

“And they did so, and made them all sit down. Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude” (Luk 9:15-16).

Some years ago, I had a conversation with a lady, as
we progressed in our conversation, I told her that she needs a broken spirit to overcome certain issues in
her relationship, she flared up suddenly, and said, her
heart and spirit are broken already and I want God to
break them more, what then will be left? How right she was unknown to her! Brokenness is the condition of being completely subdued, crushed,
squeezed and humbled by God. He wants to bring us to that point where nothing of our own is left with us, so that He can occupy every space in our lives, and when people look at us they will see nothing but Jesus. Paul said, “..it is no longer I that lives but
Christ…” (Gal. 2: 20).

Looking at the story from our text, which talks about the feeding of the multitude by Jesus, we can see that the multiplication happened at the breaking of the bread and fishes. Just imagine if these bread and fishes were humans, the breaking would had been a painful experience, but the bread and fishes were about to experience an unusual increase! They were about to feed thousands! Something that was practically impossible for them to do before they were
broken by Jesus.
Brokenness brings us to the end of ourselves and to the point where God begins to manifest Himself through us and making us to achieve what we can never achieve on our own. The bread and fishes came
to the end of themselves at the point when Jesus broke them, and from the time He handed them over to the disciples when the multiplication started, it
was no longer the bread and fishes, but God working in and through them to achieve His pleasure. Phil.2:13 says,
“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” This scripture can only be fulfilled in our lives when we surrender ourselves to the Lord for breaking.

Brokenness can be a painful experience, which is why we often resist it or come out of it prematurely. However, brokenness is a joyful experience to our
heart and spirit man. Until our heart is broken by the Lord, we cannot possess the heart of flesh, and without the heart of flesh, multiplication or enlargement cannever be possible. An enlarged heart is a heart that will be meek and humble. A man with a meek and humble heart is a man that will enjoy the
Grace of God to the fullest (James 4:6). May the Lord break us to enlarge us so that we may work in His grace for the rest of our lives in JESUS
name!
